The day finally arrived when the Los Angeles Dodgers introduced RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto as a member of the team. In the much-anticipated press conference, Yamamoto answered many questions regarding his decision to join the Dodgers as the most recent Japanese-born pitcher.
Like his teammate Shohei Ohtani, throughout this process, many speculated what was important to him in joining a team. There were rumors that Yamamoto grew up a Dodger fan, did not mind playing with another Japanese player, and wanted to win.
Donning the No. 18, Yamamoto provided a soundbite that will excite every Dodger fan. Yamamoto, when asked if Ohtani’s signing with the Dodgers impacted his decision, had this to say:
“Even if (Ohtani) went somewhere else, I probably would have ended up in L.A. with the Dodgers.”
Yamamoto wanted to be with the Dodgers, and now he is one. This quote reflects the incredible winning culture that the ownership group, Andrew Friedman, Dave Roberts, and everyone else involved has built over the past decade.
He wanted to join a team that not only could win now, but was in a position to win in the future. For a number of reasons, such as talent development and free agency acquisitions, the Dodgers are a perennial World Series contender.
The excitement in the air around Yamamoto is palpable. Needless to say, everyone is excited for when Yamamoto finally takes the mound as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
