Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Believes Gavin Stone Has ‘Some Dog in Him’ After Strong Performance vs Padres

Los Angeles Dodgers rating pitcher Gavin Stone looked like the top prospect L.A. hoped he’d be. On Saturday night, in his third start of the season, Stone was dominant as we’ve seen him in his short career.

The 25-year-old had his best outing as a pro and notched his first victory of the 2024 season. Although he didn’t receive the run support he would’ve liked, Stone did his thing on the mound. Fans and players alike, including superstar infielder Mookie Betts, were impressed with the right-handed pitcher.

After the win, Betts spoke with reporter Kirsten Watson and praised the rookie.

“That was huge. He’s young, but he’s got some dog in him up there. He’s battling, and we needed it… He showed up and showed out.”

Stone was impressive, allowing only two earned runs, one walk, five hits and four strikeouts on 88 pitches. He was perfect through five innings, and it seemed like he was about to do the impossible.

However, Stone allowed a walk in the sixth inning to end his perfect game bid and, later in the inning, allowed a hit to left that ended his no-hitting bid. After the game, Stone assessed his outcome and credited his catcher and superstar, Will Smith, for his performance.

“I felt like me and Willy were on the same page all night,” Stone said. “Just attacking and seeing where that goes.”

Stone has a 1-1 record, 15 strikeouts and a 1.57 WHIP in three starts this season. Hopefully, this is the start of something special for the 25-year-old.
