Paul Merson delivers a ‘brutal’ message about Portsmouth to two young Southampton fans after the Saints conceded to Middlesbrough late on.

Boro’s Emmanuel Latte Lath scored a 90th-minute equaliser to deny Southampton all three points in the Championship, while Portsmouth maintained their lead at the top of League One after a 3-1 win over Wycombe.

At St Mary’s, Adam Armstrong had seemingly fired Saints towards a 23rd victory of the season with his 30th goal contribution in the Championship this season – more than any other player.

But Ivorian Latte Lath nodded in his 10th goal of the campaign late on to extend Boro’s unbeaten run to five matches.

Over at Adams Park, Colby Bishop scored twice as the third tier leaders Portsmouth moved closer to promotion to the Championship with a stylish 3-1 victory at Wycombe.

Pompey are now 11 points clear of third-placed Bolton after extending their unbeaten run to 13 games and need three more victories to seal a return to the second tier after 12 years away.

Merse said when watching Middlesbrough made it 1-1 at Southampton: “Yeah, that looks like that’ll be it now. Looks like it’ll be playoffs for them, you know.

“And there’s a couple of little kids who went today. First ever game at Southampton. Young kids, there is time for you to go and support Portsmouth if you want to get that in. Didn’t he? Come on, Pompey.”
