Jermall Charlo Announces He’s Fighting Canelo On May 4th

Jermall Charlo has posted on social media today, saying he will be fighting Canelo Alvarez on May 4th. Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) still hasn’t confirmed that the fight with the unbeaten Jermall (33-0, 22 KOs) will be happening next, but that’s the match that is rumored to be taking place on that date on Amazon Prime PPV.

Charlo’s Bold Announcement

“Canelo fighting Jermall Charlo, May 4,” said Jermall on Instagram, seemingly announcing his fight with undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo to be happening next.

Fans are complaining big time about them hating the idea of Canelo defending his undisputed super middleweight championship against Jermall, who has been inactive through most of the last three years and doesn’t fight at 168. People want to see Canelo fight David Benavidez or Terence Crawford if he will face an American fighter.

Uncertainty Persists

Canelo and his team haven’t said anything to confirm that Jermall will be the one they’re facing next. That could mean they’re still in talks with the 33-year-old Jermall, and there’s always the possibility they could go in another direction if things turn sour.

“What that left you with was Canelo would probably fight Jermall Charlo, who is a middleweight,” said Dan Rafael to Boxing Social about Canelo Alvarez revealing yesterday that his next opponent will be an American fighter, which rules out Jaime Munguia for his May 4th contest on Cinco de Mayo.

“So, you get two Charlos for the price of two on pay-per-view. It’s not going to be David Benavidez, which is going to be a big disappointment to a lot of people. That’s the fight that should be happening. That’s the one that makes the most sense if you’re trying to sell PPV.

“The only one that could compete or maybe do a little bit better at the moment. That’s a fight they could actually make. That’s the Crawford fight, but if he’s not fighting Crawford, I don’t know a single person out there that would want to see Charlo over David Benavidez or Munguia.

“The Charlo fight, I don’t get. He’s the WBC middleweight champion. He hasn’t defended that title for some time. he was out for two and a half years, and came back for a fight that was over the weight and didn’t defend the title. He didn’t look particularly good in that fight [against Jose Benavidez Jr.].
