Sporting director says Chelsea are in “nightmare position” over £30m midfielder

Tottenham are ready to return and pursue Conor Gallagher again next summer, Matt Law is reporting in an exclusive for the Daily Telegraph today.

The midfielder was linked with our rivals for all of last summer, but nothing materialised, despite a reported deadline day bid. Gallagher stayed put and has become a key player this season, one of the few to emerge with any credit from an overall poor campaign. He scored twice last night against Crystal Palace to turn a 1-0 deficit into a win.

Law says that talks over a contract are going nowhere, with “no significant progress” on a new deal meaning Chelsea will be even more keen to sell the midfielder this summer before his value collapses. Still just 24, almost every Blues fan around would rather see him sign a new deal and stay at the club, even as a long term backup.

A source quoted by Law says that Chelsea are in a “nightmare position” where the player’s salary demands are rising, because of the way he is playing and captaining the team regularly, while his value falls – a £30m to £35m fee is mentioned by the source as likely. Chelsea are either going to have to pay him more than he wants, or sell him for less than they want.
