Australian Test keeper Alex Carey set a new domestic record and equalled a world record at the same time on a wild final day of the one-day competition as an extraordinary maiden century from Tom Rogers put Victoria on the verge of securing a home final.
Rogers smashed 30 boundaries including 15 sixes on his way to 196 off 142 balls in only his eighth domestic one-day game as Victoria set New South Wales 312 to win in a season-defining clash at the North Sydney Oval.
The 25-year-old left-hander, who had showed glimpses of his talent this summer during a solid Big Bash campaign with the Melbourne Stars, took advantage of the short square boundaries as he almost single-handedly fired the Vics into the box seat with help from captain Peter Handscomb (52).
The winner of the clash will claim top spot on the ladder and win the rights to host the final, while a loss for the Blues could mean they slide out of the top two if Western Australia beat Tasmania in Hobart.
In Adelaide Test keeper Carey, back playing for his state before heading off for the tour of New Zealand, pouched a staggering eight catches in his team’s dead-rubber clash with Queensland.
Five of Carey’s catches were taken off the bowling of Jordan Buckingham, who finished with 6-41 in the Bulls’ total of 218 at Karen Rolton Oval on Wednesday.
The enormous haul equalled the world record for catches, a feat previously achieved twice in English county cricket by Derek Taylor for Somerset against Combined Universities in 1982 and James Pipe for Worcestershire against Hertfordshire in 2001.
But Carey’s new mark is an Australia List A record on its own – the most ever catches in a 50-over game in Australia and equal for the most ever dismissals in a professional one-day match.
Former Aussie and NSW wicketkeeper Peter Nevill took eight dismissals in a match against the Cricket Australia XI in 2017, but that included six catches and two stumpings.
Buckingham tore through Queensland’s middle order to leave them 5-47 before the visitors were rescued by first-time captain Marnus Labuschagne (74) and debutant keeper Dylan McLachlan (45), who put on 100 for the sixth wicket.
WA posted an imposing 4-320 to pile pressure on New South Wales’ finals qualification hopes as D’Arcy Short returned to form with 127 from 121 balls against Tasmania.
Cameron Bancroft (64) and Sam Whiteman (49) also made handy contributions in an inexperienced side including seam-bowling debutants Keaton Critchell and Bryce Jackson.
