The almost certain collapse of the Rebels will completely destroy the gains made by Union in Victoria since its establishment.
In Victoria at least, the sport is growing – especially among Islander communities living in the poorer parts of Melbourne. The Rebels have been a huge part of this success.
There are a range of programs based around Union – including one in my old home town – that have not just generated rugby players but directed at-risk youth towards positive choices.
I have grave fears that Rugby Australia will continue to contract to the wealthy suburbs of Sydney and Brisbane and the associated private schools and rugby in Victoria will be cut off at the knees.
